The Maritimes-Guatemala Breaking the Silence Network (BTS) is pleased to announce that Angelica Choc will be in the Maritimes from October 27 – November 1, 2013. Choc is the widow of Adolfo Ich, who was allegedly slain by security forces from nickel company Hudbay Minerals on September 27, 2009. She will be in the Maritimes to promote,“Defensora,” a documentary that tells the story of Ich and those who defend their land and resources from the threats that large scale mining projects in Guatemala propose.
Choc brought the case of her husband to an Ontario Court in 2011. She has formally charged that Hudbay Minerals is responsible for the death of her husband, Ich, a community leader and teacher, who was killed by machete on a Sunday afternoon near his house. Twelve others, including 11 women who were gang raped during a violent land eviction near the mine, and another man who was left paralyzed after being shot the same day that Adolfo was murdered, will also have their cases heard in the Ontario court, which has accepted all 13 cases. Read more about the cases.
While in the Maritimes, Choc will visit Halifax, Antigonish, Tatamagouche and Fredericton (information and posters here). Following the screening of Defensora, Choc will share her own testimony of struggle and answer questions. In addition to her speaking engagements in the Maritimes, she will be in Ottawa and Toronto and British Colombia.
Choc was in the region in March 2013 and left a lasting impression on all she met. Her courage and strength despite tremendous adversity is admirable; she has a tremendous ability to bring alive and make present the story of her family and community. BTS is pleased to bring Angelica back to the Maritimes.
