Update from El Estor
On September 27, the family of Professor Adolfo Ich remembered his contributions to the community of La Union and the struggle for indigenous land rights in El Estor, Guatemala. The day marked six years since his murder that was witnessed by his son at the hands of the former head of security for the Fenix Nickle mine, at that time owned by Canadian Hudbay Minerals.
The trial against Mynor Padilla for the murder of Adolfo Ich continues into October. However, the trial has been the site of continued conflict between the judge, the accused’s family and the prosecution. The next trial dates are set to go forward mid-October.
The civil case for his murder continues in Canadian courts.
Update from San Miguel Ixtahuacan & Sipakapa
The resistance continues in San Miguel Ixtauacan,San Marcos. FREDEMI, a long time partner of Breaking the Silence,supported Aniseto Lopez in his unsuccessful bid for mayor of the community.
One of the major concerns expressed by communities surrounding the Marlin mine, owned by Canadian mining giant Goldcorp, is plans for closure. While Goldcorp has said they are planning to close the Marlin mine communities are unsure of closure plans for the mine. However, for now work continues at the Marlin mine, within surrounding communities suffering the consequences.
Update from Santa Rosa and Jalapa
The 2015 Guatemalan elections show a continued strong opposition to mining in the communities closest to the Tahoe Resources’ San Rafael mine. In both San Rafael las Flores, the location of the mine, and SAnta Rosa de Lima, mayors were elected with clear pro-consultation platforms. Current mayor of Mataquescuintla, Hugo Loy, was re-elected for a second term, and is well known throughout the country for his stance on mining. The community consultation held in Mataquescuitla was declared binding and the municipality has remained mine free.
