For seven years, communities have peacefully and democratically demonstrated their opposition to Tahoe Resources’ Escobal silver mine in Guatemala. In an open letter to the Canadian company’s new CEO, James Voorhees, and Executive Chair, Kevin McArthur, the Peaceful Resistance of Santa Rosa, Jalapa, and Jutiapa and the Xinka People’s Parliament of Guatemala insist that Tahoe end the environmental harms, community division, militarization and repression that the project has brought into their lives, and permanently close the mine.
Since June 2017, thousands of people from the resistance have maintained a 24-hour, 7-day a week encampment in the municipality of Casillas to prevent mine related traffic from reaching the mine. Then, in July 2017, Guatemalan courts suspended the Escobal project over discrimination and failure to consult with Xinka Indigenous people. With a final ruling pending, Tahoe has claimed they are ready to restart operations as soon as the courts clear the way, disregarding widespread opposition and opening the door for future human rights abuses.
