First summer trip to Meander River Market
By: Maren Mealey and Rae Millis, BTS summer interns
On July 21st, Breaking the Silence (BTS) had their first Meander River Market day of the year. Several BTS volunteers set-up a tent along with other vendors outside of the Meander River Farm and Brewery in Newport.
BTS sold both hot and iced coffee, as well as hot chocolate, Maritimes tea, and varieties of chocolate bars from our friends at Just Us! Coffee. We also had a separate table set up with beautiful handmade crafts, including woven wallets and change purses, stunning beaded earrings and keychains, woven cotton scarves, and more. Most of these items come from United for a Better Life (UPAVIM), an inspiring women’s cooperative in Guatemala who have created a haven of community and beauty in their neighbourhood of La Esperanza.
The Meander River Market happens monthly from July to November and features many other local vendors selling a variety of goods, along with live music. Delicious food and snacks were also available with ciders and of course the Breaking the Silence coffee.
Our first trip to Meander River Market was very successful. The day was hot and humid but people were excited to try BTS’s delicious iced coffee made with cold BTS coffee and ice cubes made from the dark roast coffee as well. It was encouraging to hear the positive feedback we got from customers enjoying the coffee. By the end of the day, the iced coffee had sold out!
We hope you’ll visit us at the Meander River Market over the coming months. BTS will be on-site on August 18th, September 15th, October 20th, and November 17th. See you there!
