After arriving in Guatemala City on October 26 and settling into our accommodations, we enjoyed a much-needed night’s rest. The next morning for breakfast we were served fresh tortillas, eggs, and beans.
Following breakfast, we set out to Casa de la Memoria, a deeply moving experience and a place dedicated to preserving the memory of those affected by Guatemala’s long and painful conflict. The exhibits provided a powerful look into the country’s history of human rights abuses, resilience, and the ongoing pursuit of justice and reconciliation. It was a humbling experience that offered profound insight into the struggles and strength of the Guatemalan people.

We then returned to Casa San Benito, where Javier provided an update on the current political climate in Guatemala, an eye opening discussion that highlighted the continuing challenges of corruption, inequality, and the fight for democracy. After such a heavy but important day, our group had a meaningful conversation about how we can use our voices and advocacy to raise awareness and support positive change.
Later, we took a short break while supper was prepared. The evening closed with a time of reflection and journaling, allowing us to process the day’s experiences and emotions before ending a full, thought provoking first day in Guatemala.
