The Maritimes-Guatemala Breaking the Silence Network (BTS) is looking for a creative and thoughtful Interim Maritimes Coordinator with a deep commitment to and passion for solidarity with Guatemala. This person will support our work, primarily in the Maritimes, and will be flexible and self-motivated with strong time-management skills, excellent interpersonal and written communications skills, and a demonstrated interest in community engagement. As the Maritimes Coordinator works closely with the BTS Community Council and Local Committees, all of which are volunteer-based, this person must be comfortable taking initiative, working independently, and be willing to meet with volunteers during evenings and weekends, as needed.

The successful candidate will coordinate BTS’ priority areas of work in Canada, including:

  • Helping to formulate and support the BTS network’s advocacy and solidarity initiatives.
  • Supporting and engaging BTS Local Committees in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. This will require regular travel throughout the year to meet with Local Committees.
  • Creating effective communications within the BTS Network and with Guatemalan partners.
  • Collaborating with other BTS staff, the BTS Community Council (CC), local and working committees, volunteers, students, Canadian partner organizations, and other stakeholders.

Background

BTS is a voluntary network of people in the Maritimes who began to organize in 1988 to support the efforts of Guatemalans struggling for political, social, and economic justice. Injustice is the result of structural inequalities both within and between countries, and BTS is committed to supporting structural transformation both in Guatemala and in Canada. Moreover, we recognize the interconnectedness of these two contexts. As a result, we strive to engage in solidarity with and build bridges between the Original Peoples’ (Pueblos Originarios) organizations and communities with whom we work in Guatemala, and the Indigenous communities in whose territories we are situated in the Maritimes. We recognize the ongoing impacts of colonization on Indigenous communities in both these contexts.

Our work is guided by a commitment to equity and opposing systemic oppression, as well as building long-term relationships based on solidarity and mutuality. When we respond to partner needs, we respond jointly with our organizational partners in Guatemala. Our relationships are built on friendship, sharing, and dialogue as we work, learn, unlearn, and grow together.

Candidate Qualities

The successful candidate will have:

  • Excellent program coordination skills and experience.
  • Strong facilitation skills and experience.
  • Intermediate (at minimum) Spanish language skills, spoken and written.
  • Be located in the Maritimes.
  • Be able to work remotely, with reliable access to a computer, phone, and internet (BTS does not have office space).
  • Have a valid driver’s licence and access to a vehicle, or be able to make travel arrangements quickly in response to flexible nature of the work.
  • Be willing and able to travel, regionally, nationally, and internationally, including regular, frequent travel throughout the Maritimes for 1-7 days at a time.
  • Share BTS’ commitment to our work and philosophy.
  • Understanding of the historical and current social, cultural, and economic context in Guatemala.
  • Have a strong analysis of and depth of experience in resisting the ongoing impacts of colonialism and structures of oppression in Canada and Guatemala.
  • Have a demonstrated interest in global human rights and social justice.
  • Experience developing and guiding advocacy initiatives and campaigns.
  • Have the flexibility necessary to coordinate work schedules with other staff, including the Guatemala Coordinator and Cooperant Program Coordinator (both based in Guatemala), and BTS volunteers as needed.
  • Work well both independently and as a team member.
  • Have strong writing skills and experience writing funding applications, as well as writing for newsletters and digital platforms (website, etc.).

Job Description

The Interim Maritimes Coordinator will:

  • Support BTS solidarity work in the Maritimes.
  • Provide support and content to the Communications and Administrative Coordinator, ensuring regular communication with the BTS Network through email, social media, monthly newsletter, website, etc.
  • Serve as the main liaison and support person for BTS Local Committees (PEI, Moncton region, Halifax, Fredericton, Antigonish, and North Shore), and visit each Committee at least once a year.
  • Attend Cooperant Program Committee meetings and support projects as needed.
  • Inform and coordinate advocacy efforts with Canadian-based partners and the larger BTS network in relation to BTS priority areas: human rights and mining, with gender as a cross-cutting theme in relation to the two priorities.
  • Promote and support cross-cultural learning to deepen solidarity relationships. This may include coordinating possible Maritimes Speaking tours with BTS guests, possible participation in pre-departure training of the Canadian delegation to Guatemala (pre-departure training will take place from June 23-26 2026 for November 2026 Delegation), etc.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Terms and Conditions

  • Hours and pay: The Interim Maritimes Coordinator will be temporarily contracted from June 15, 2026 to April 30, 2027 to work 27 hours per week at a rate of $30 per house, to be invoiced as an independent contractor and paid monthly.
